One day we'll be gray,
living on an island.
Our children,
our grandchildren will come,
and share our love for the ocean.
A love for all the peace it offers.
You will tell them about the acrobatics of the Tarpon,
how he got away from me one summer day,
in the Florida keys.
When the water was crystal blue,
when I was young.
You will tell them
how I didn't rest,
until I caught another.
How my spirits soared,
my hands trembled,
as I kissed him goodbye.
There will be laughter,
good food and wine.
One day we will
be gray,
you and I.
smiles. what a tender verse...one day we will be gray...and i hope it is just as you describe...
ReplyDeleteThis is really lovely.
ReplyDeleteAh, beautiful description of enjoyable "golden years." Your lines also have a winsome tone, which fits the ocean setting very well.
ReplyDeleteyes - one day we will be grey and look back on life and the open sea ahead of us...tender and beautiful ayala
ReplyDelete*sigh*
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mama Zen, this is really lovely indeed.
great poem. soo sweet. yes, one day we all will be grey.
ReplyDeleteI love the dream of growing old together. Excellent! :D
ReplyDeleteA story of time, love, and tender humanity...showing that sweetness does not falter with age, nor should we let the joy of living. The gray comes - but so do many other joys, as others have gone before... A lovely tale, at all that.
ReplyDeleteWe will all be there one day...I hope to accept this stage of life with dignity and grace as your couple...
ReplyDeleteBrian... Smiles ... Thank you. I hope it's like that for all of us.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mama Zen.

Wonderfully sweet emotion in this piece. ~ Rose
ReplyDeleteLove the emotional pull, the tendered thoughts... reaching for that special moment together... the future.
ReplyDeleteMemories become more real as the years pass; a peaceful island is a lovely image.
ReplyDeleteAnd even when the gray comes, those memories can preserve in us such a youthful, energetic perspective that keeps us from seeing ourselves as old. A wonderful poem.
ReplyDeleteI hope my life will be like that when I am gray(er)!
ReplyDeleteThe stories that will be told as one grays are a delight; a beautiful poem of hope for the future.
ReplyDeleteAs someone with some of that graying hair - and getting close in age to that couple in the photo -- I identify with this poem. Nice one.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful, ayala. To share the stories of life within the circles of life is something to treasure.

ReplyDeleteYou've captured the feeling behind the image here, or perhaps given it your own. Simple, clear and full of peace.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hedge :)
ReplyDeleteOh, sigh, I love this....makes me want to hold on to that thought, "grow old along with me, the best is yet to be."
ReplyDeleteLove this, and wish that old age would treat everyone this way.It reminds me, too, of the words Adrienne mentions above.
ReplyDeleteAdrienne, sigh yes ... I hope we all have it!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chris and yes , wish old age could be such a gift !
ReplyDeleteAging has it's benefits. I want to travel all of Italy with Nick when we're old(er)... that is why we had kids so young. ;)
