The sound familiar
as it echoes through
the house.
The couch sighs
the way it did when
she jumped off
to chase a squirrel
in the yard
or follow me
when I walked away.
The memory recovered
the way she retrieved sticks
on autumn days.
Her wet nose,
red collar,
unbridled joy,
shaking the rain
as she swayed.
She faintly smelled like trees,
she wagged her tail
while words of poetry
danced on the page.
Outside the window,
leaves are scattered,
the homeless cat can
no longer tell her tales
of the birds she hunts
and duck eggs left unattended
for moments at a time.
She daydreamed,
we daydreamed,
side by side.
The use of past tense here quite tore my heart out, and made me urgently need to go pet my own sweet pup. So sad, and so well done.

DeleteOh I'm so sad... and the contrast between the smiling dog on your header mad my heart ache... wonderful
ReplyDeleteThank you so much
DeleteSounds like a great relationship - A lot to be thankful for, even after loss.
ReplyDeleteI am forever grateful .
DeleteReminds me of the pet I once had - don't know he day dreamed though, perhaps he did. Lovely piece.
ReplyDeleteI would like to think that they do.
DeleteThis is wonderful: "She faintly smelled like trees" - that is so true.
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly.
DeleteNothing more comforting than daydreaming side by side with one's dog. What a nice memory you have shared today, Ayala.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary. I miss her so much and I am thankful for the life we shared.

DeleteSweet, loving, heartfelt tribute to a dear companion. So sorry about your loss.
ReplyDeleteThank you Marina! It's been some time but I miss her.
DeleteThis is so memorable. I had a golden retriever once and there is still a loss. Dogs do have such distinct characters. It is so difficult when they have to leave us.
ReplyDeleteThey become family.... So difficult .
DeleteOh, your Daisy. This makes me tear up because she was so like my soul mate dog--a Golden Mix. It's just not something you ever get over, really!
ReplyDeleteAww Victoria. I know that you feel this. Xox
DeleteSigh.
DeleteI am so sorry about your loss Ayala. I almost lost my Daisy this week and know she is old and won't be around too long. My heart breaks for you. I know the grief.
ReplyDelete(Glad I stopped by today. Yope you're well.)
Thank you Myrna. Daisy is gone for awhile now but I never stop missing her.
DeleteWe never forget our pets...a wonderful memorial.
