Youth

I squandered days,
months,
years.
I squandered youth,
living in my moment of reckless abandon.
I did not treasure it
nor cherish it,
I lived it ,
not questioning the consequence,
not questioning forever.
If I laid down my blunders
like a feast on a table,
would you cut them one by one
with a scalpel and examine their severity?
Would you ravage them like a vulture
does roadkill .
Would you judge ?
or would you celebrate,
 lines blurred ,
coloring outside the lines,
the beauty of risk,
  lessons learned,
wisdom extracted ,
a story of survival,
a story of life.

Anywho, I love this poem. Speaks to lost years. However, I believe that it's never ever too late to begin anew :)

    1. No regrets and not lost years but lessons learned the hard way..and not realizing that life flies. Also in youth there is a lack of fear that later we acquire by learning those hard lessons. :)

  2. i think even our failings help form us into who we are, so i try not to dissect them or let them steal the moment...we do waste time though and should think on that...making the most of all we are given...

    2. What I was trying to express is that when we are young we don't quite realize how precious life is. :)

  3. Can learn from each task we take up or don't take up, sometimes the hard way indeed.

  5. Ayala, I am sure all your experiences brought you to the place where you are today, thus your youth was not squandered but was fertile ground for learning. Just think, if you had done things differently, you might not be where you are; and I doubt you would want that. Smiles!

    1. Thank you, Mary. I agree with you..and I do feel like it made me who I am...I have no regrets......
Everything I did and everything I went through was a lesson and sometimes we sacrifice a lot without knowing the cost...

  8. I love this piece! The meaning resonates with me. So much was lost on my youth but so much wisdom gained. I have tried so hard to instill this to my children. Nicely done!

    1. Thank you, Lincoln. Our wisdom we can't instill as much as we want to because they want to learn on our own the way we did :)

  16. I like the straight forwardness of this - the confession, the questioning and then the final lines of acceptance and self fulfillment - really like this! K

Examination is good but live now, cherish now.

    Well written.

I believe it is helpful for us who have been sober a long time to let the new Peeps know that NOBODY'S Perfect here. That way they will not despair when they start remembering.

Excellent piece of writing. I'm CELEBRATING!!!

  19. They say youth is wasted on the young. Adele says You know how the time flies Only yesterday was the time of our lives We were born and raised in a summer haze Bound by the surprise of our glory days

  20. What a thought provoking poem. Excused youthful blunders? Always. I suppose the true tragedy is if we don't gain wisdom with age. And I know a few who haven't.

If I laid down my blunders
like a feast on a table,

    Great, great image!

  22. We've all got to make mistakes sometimes, as they often lea us to our successes.

  23. I love the up-front honesty of this. We all make mistakes, especially when we're young, but we don't all learn from them. The story of our lives doesn't consist in only our mistakes though; we've all made good choices that we have no cause at all to regret.

  26. Ayala...I suppose we all experience this. I do, for sure. And it's just part of our life journey I guess, teaching us chesed for ourselves as well as others.

  27. This made me stop and think about my own youth. I think the beauty of youth is that we do squander our time...we revel in the notion that life is limitless. You captured that essence brilliantly, ayala.

  28. Hi Ayala, I'm really slow getting around this week. I really like this one. And for the record I would give you a standing ovation for:
    "coloring outside the lines,
    the beauty of risk,
    lessons learned,
    wisdom extracted" most definitely!

  29. if I laid down my blunders
like a feast on a table,

liked that especially. it's not for anyone to judge what is or isn't a blunder...one can choose to empathise...or not...stop at the table or move on if you like...but judging is difficult...we all have tables groaning under the weight of our own I think :)

I enjoyed the wisdom in your verse
