Mid Life Overhaul

The works,
oil change,
tire rotation,
with a free multi point inspection.
Imagine if there was one
for your soul too ?
Rotate the mind,
oil the bones,
extract the old,
replace with the new,
or is that the mid life crisis ?
A new sports car,
a trophy wife,
one that can't articulate a sentence
if her life depended on it.
She owns knee pads,
and tattoos with his name.
She acts helpless,
while he runs to her rescue.
She will drink him like a tall
glass of water,
and laugh at all his jokes.
His blood pumping,
heart racing ,
age is just a number he claims.
Yes, the works
oil change anyone?

I was sitting on a bench at Ford waiting to drop off our car. I saw this sign and started to write. This was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend of mine about men in her circle of friends.

  2. ha...you know i think we should regularly have that check up on our life like an oil change...a chance to make sure we are heading in the right direction and our taks are full and well lubed...

  10. Humorfully and truthfully said--I think it may be about time for the old 60k mile tune-up for me as well!

  11. Oh boy...can I ever relate... Instead of the knee pads...maybe cortisone. That would be my oil change. I'll take it...especially when I consider the alternative. Nice write!

  12. Oil Change - nice wordplay here. Well as an old lady, I can say, we do need those tune-ups and more often as we get older. I guess for men, they need to remember what got their hearts and minds racing when they were young; for women it means re-prioritizing and it changes often, but ethics, what you cherish, what you can give, what you want to say, what you want to leave in the hearts and minds of the ones you love are all high on that list.

  15. Funny how I react positively to the thought of an 'overhaul' but so negatively to the KIND of overhaul you so delicately describe! I feel so blessed to love my "mid life"...would like some extra energy, but wouldn't 'trade in' a thing!

  18. This was fabulous, ayala. I have to wonder at those types of shallow relationships...how they must shrink a soul instead of enrich it.

  20. Sometimes this kind of oil change seems magical. Would that it worked for women as well as men.

  21. Ha! Well, I could use an oil change if it brought knee pads with it! Very clever! k.

  24. Great metaphor - I t made me think about roadside service stations designed just for middle aged men who could go in- by a new sports car, get a really unfashionable makeover, and a signnupmfor an affair with a woman 20 years younger!

  25. I like the metaphor here. I think mid life crises tend to come when you realise you can't change all the parts like a car though...and oil has ever diminishing effect!

I fancy being parked up in a field when the time comes, and letting daisies grow through my bodywork.

  26. haha:) a midlife crisis can be helpful in the long run. i like that possibility.

  41. This is deeply profound..it's amazing, I was once a trophy wife, and you become mindless, even if you aren't naturally. You are treated like an expensive watch, and you begin to think that this is all that you are.
