A modern day knight
in shinning armor,
for his country.
His official passport wallpapered
with truths untold.
At what cost,
his family?
his soul ?
Saving lives but not
his own.
He dreams out loud of fishing
with his boys,
a snapshot of their life.
His voice trails,
"I lost my family" he said,
defeated,
silent.
Focus the eye on the prize,
but the prize is gone.
It belongs to a man sleeping
with the wife he loved,
raising his children.
Time awaits for no one,
the price was paid,
as the smell of war lingers,
in his senses.
The smell of burnt bodies seared into his memory.
The pain of young fallen soldiers,
he masks the pain,
but I hear it loud and clear,
sharp as a knife ,
the words scar my soul.
oh this is sad and heavy...always busy and yet lose you family...or off serving your country and the same..either way...ugh...nice write
ReplyDeletesad heart-touching ...a wonderful write.
ReplyDeletethere are far too many of those modern day knights...and they give their life to win...and yet lose everything..
ReplyDeleteHow true it is...on so very many levels, that we can spend our lives, or part of them, fighting for the worng things. This is quite stirring. As I do with many of your poems, I'll be back for a re-read.
ReplyDeletegave it all to win and lost in the end.. great piece!
ReplyDeleteVery nice write
ReplyDeleteAbout such a plight
As such a knight has many things to say
If only he could still speak today
Yet through the so called glory he is now past
As war should no longer last
This hangs heavy with the reader. You even evoke smell. Well constructed piece.

ReplyDeleteHeart-wrenching and lovely poem. I especially loved your ending.
ReplyDeleteThis is the stuff I think of, whenever some new war comes along and everybody seems to be all for it, convinced it will be easy and short. This is the cost. Times a few million.
