The trees whisper in the woods,
dancing to the sound of the wind.
The sun rose holding secrets
of the night.
My thoughts once raging,
left diluted by sadness.
Why do we have to lose
someone we love,
to celebrate our life,
to savor the days
and feel the joy in the simple and mundane.
We weather the storm
and extract wisdom
from the lesson learned.
Why do we have to feel depleted
before we discover life again
and all it's wonder.
The wine glass half consumed,
winks back.
Life is not perfect,
life is not a Hallmark card.
Sometimes life is fought in trenches,
lines are blurred,
with sorrow comes rediscovery,
questions unanswered.
Slowly we sip the
other half.
I want to thank all of you for your kind comments for Jacob and his family. I appreciate each and every one. Please meet us here http://dversepoets.com/ where we share our thoughts and our hearts.
Good question indeed, just have to wait for the other half to fill again
ReplyDelete"Life is not perfect" - the hardest lesson of all to learn, ayala. It's only in retrospect that I realize my best life lessons came from heartbreak and hardship. When things are zipping sweetly along, I'm sort of oblivious.
ReplyDeleteits hard you know....for some the reminder of our mortality is crippling...for others there is a sense of peace...we also find each other in that pain as it is something we all have experienced...like kim says when all is going well we take more for granted it seems...
ReplyDeleteLife has its ups and downs. More often than not one is not aware when things are good. One gets easily worked up when bad! Nicely ayala!
ReplyDeleteHank
It is easy to say, "He has gone to a better place." Or "Wonderful! He suffers no more. He has passed the test."
ReplyDeleteSomehow those words do not fill the hole in the heart, any more than a half glass of wine. This is when I realize that time to heal take time. Sometimes God and I seem closer after the death of a loved one.
"...when one close to me has died,
I die a little myself inside."
Steve E.
i think that difficult events make us aware again of what we got - and thankful as well - sad that it is like this..
ReplyDeleteSo true, and so gorgeously said.
ReplyDeleteI specially love your reflections here:
ReplyDeletewith sorrow comes rediscovery,
questions unanswered.
Slowly we sip the
other half.
We are thankful for all our blessings, truly ~
I am so saddened by your loss. I will respectfully leave honoring him with moments of silence.

ReplyDelete"The wine glass half consumed,
ReplyDeletewinks back."...loved this piece...and how the glass is drained in the end...very true.
So saddened by your loss...
ReplyDeleteThe question of why is one that has no answer. I know......been there.... and, nope, it isn't a Hallmark life....but hopefully there will again be Hallmark moments.
ReplyDeleteThis is quite moving, very sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this so much then I scrolled down to the text below and saw that it wasn't an academic argument. My condolences and thanks for a beautiful poem.
ReplyDeleteI struggle with the pendulum you eloquently describe in your poem. How do we move forward from loss? I am still trying to process that question. Much love to you and yours, Ayala during this very tough time. xoxo

ReplyDeleteThis really struck me, Ayala, and then I realize I'd missed a post. I'm so sorry about Jacob's loss. I think sometimes life is more beautiful because of its fragility.
ReplyDeletei am so sorry for your loss. this poem has a sense of immediacy, i wish i could answer some of these questions for you, i've been asking the same ones for a long time.
ReplyDeleteOnce again you write something beautiful in commemoration. It is sad to lose someone, to have to discover our own lives this way, to sip the other half, but ... life is sad sometimes.
ReplyDeleteas it is always said... life goes on. A heart-felt creation...
ReplyDeleteI like a winking glass and the we must be emptied in order to be filled.
ReplyDeleteWe must know sorrow in order to enjoy happiness, in my opinion, Ayala. I like the bit about the wine glass as well.
ReplyDeletePamela

ReplyDeletelife is not a Hallmark card.

So very sorry for your loss. If you can have questions answered, that is quite wonderful==all difficult == such is life, of course, but that doesn't make it less difficult. k. (Manicddaily.wordpress.) k.

ReplyDeleteI think we need these reminders because we do forget, we take life for granted, it's human nature. It is a hard lesson, but one that does allow to appreciate the second half of that glass. xoxo
