His Landscape

His fingers play with
my jingle-jangle bracelets.
Wood beads from India,
Chinese coins my friends and I wear,
an eye encased in gold to ward
off evil spirits,
Buddha with a turquoise bead
and a ladybug.
He touches them gently
feeling each one,
knowing them the way
he knows my lullabies.
The way he knows my voice,
when we dream about the moon and the stars.
When I move away he stretches
to find me in his sleep,
to find the curve of my waist,
where I held his father long ago.
I listen to his breath,
his presence fills my soul.
I dream big dreams for him.
I build memories,
they echo the laughter we share.
A landscape he can remember
and carry in his heart,
the way I carry him in my being.

  8. Sadly, these bonds don't always last. For you and your family, I hope you never know the pain of separation, as it cuts deep into one's soul. This, I talk from personal experience with my mom.

  10. So that is what it is like, that is what the touching is for, and to touch and carry the voice like a bead, like a body, is a magnificent image, even better for ringing true!

  18. I enjoyed the sounds in your poem, Ayala: the jingle-jangle bracelets, wooden beads and coins, I can imagine they keep the little guy entertained, and, of course, your lullabies and laughter. You've created a beautiful feeling of closeness and warmth.

  19. What a wonderful picture of love you have painted. The words you used conveyed so much more than there mere dictionary definitions would warrant.

  20. Some confusion for me as to the time, after he has grown or as a toddler, or both--the father from /long ago/ left me searching for more back story and connections. I lost my mother when she was 39. Your sweet maternal poetics hits my center heart.

One would want great things for a grand-baby more than what one provided for a son!
