You made snow angels
in the white soft snow.
The sun was honey colored,
like the color of my dreams.
The moments fleeting,
it was not lost on me.
I knew that these are magical moments
that will become a rarity,
because I gave you wings
to soar up high,
to fly,
to taste freedom and life.
I savored the hours,
through my dark glasses.
My soul rested,
the way we did in the lodge
up in the woods.
Snow was silent,
like my thoughts.
I left the worries behind
to elevate my soul,
to lay my weary heart
in a safe place.
I listened to the mountains
as the sun rose
it brushed up
it brushed up
against them
and fondled them.
and fondled them.
I drank coffee in front of the fire
I listened to the woods,
I listened to my spirit.
The tree is twinkling,
your baby ornaments wink
attempting to make me smile.
My dreams came true,
you created a life
you soar like the stars,
This Christmas my heart will
miss you more than you'll ever know.
Our son Josh was not home for Christmas. It was the first time in 27 years, the first time since he was born. We were blessed to have him here for the New Year. I wrote this poem in December and now I am sharing it. Please join us here http://dversepoets.com/ where we share our thoughts and our hearts.
oy i know that was hard...store up the moments while you can...they pass far too quick and they are off building a life...ah...i feel it already and my boys still have years to go...
ReplyDeleteYes...so hard..but I am grateful.
DeleteComes a day indeed, but great you got to see him later on at your feed
ReplyDelete:)
Deleteyour love for him shines on every single line... my little one was in costa rica this year - her first christmas apart from the fam... three years ago my eldest one was in bolivia...and she was sick on christmas eve... yep...you can imagine how my mother heart was bleeding...
ReplyDeleteYes..I can imagine how your heart bled...I know. Thank you, Claudia.

ReplyDeleteAt least he was with you for the New year, smiles ~ I know how hard it must have been, I can relate ~ Love to the picture & your mother's love dripping from each line ~ Have a good day Ayala ~
ReplyDeleteGrace
Thank you, Grace. Not so easy...Have a great day too.
Deleteoh, the tears are flowing. I can hear the silence. I can feel the joy in the young life that is soaring, and the empty place in a Mama's heart on Christmas day. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteAdrienne, you know how it is...thanks.xo
DeleteThat was magical. All the more since it's coming from deep inside you. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Thank you kindly.
DeleteThe separations when your son is not home... oh those snowangels have used their wings... love the image. And so good he can come home for new.year....
ReplyDeleteYes...it was so good. A brief visit but great.
DeleteIt must have been so difficult not to have him home for the very first time at Christmas. I like the way you describe making snow angels in the snow & the reality that some moments become more and more rare because you gave your son wings. The wings are a blessing for him, but also hard for a parent who has to become more and more used to these separations as time goes on. Glad he came home for New Year's.
ReplyDeleteI have to be honest, it just didn't feel like Christmas without him. I am grateful thought that he is doing something so important with his life.Thank you, Mary. I was so happy when he came home.
DeleteYou give them flight, then carry them in your head at times like that, more than they can know... well told.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Colin. :)
DeleteThis is so beautiful, I'm touched.
ReplyDeleteI have no children but I think it can't be easy to see them hit the road. Still I always think of Khalil Gibran's words in the Prophet:
Your children are not your children
they are the sons and daughters of
life's longing for itself.
Kiss you. <3
Thank you, Kenia. Great quote by a great man.
DeleteHeartfelt words. It's always difficult when a loved one in not there for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tony.
DeleteVery beautiful! Even those we help out of the nest have these occasions for returning, and if missed we feel the absence. When tht is only temporary, one could praise the revelation.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan. :)
DeleteI am not surprised Christmas did not feel the same without your son if he had always been present before. I am glad you could see him later and tat you know he is happy!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gabriella.
DeleteI always especially enjoy your richly created evocations of times past - which tell the reader how richly and truly you live your life Ayala - always uplifting... With Best Wishes Scott www.scotthastie.com
ReplyDeleteThank you, Scott. I appreciate it.
DeleteI have a 27 year old son too... still at home... I think I'll ask him to make a snow angel with his little niece... empty nest is an on-going thing
ReplyDeleteI know :)
DeleteA heartfelt poem..sometimes angels have to fly..the pic made me want to make one in the snow but, our snow has melted.
ReplyDeleteNext time it snows... :)
DeleteI think of the sun as pouring honey into milk snow. This has so much lightness but the missing is sad.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Colleen :)
DeleteFestivals are all about being our loved ones indeed.
ReplyDeleteVery heartfelt. Great imagery & storytelling. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Katie.
DeleteThis mother's heart felt yours, Ayala. So sweet your love for your son...loved your musing as you observed his absence yet seemed at peace just the same.
ReplyDeleteThank you...I was at peace that he was doing something important while he was missing Christmas.... :( :)
DeleteYou can make peace knowing that he is happy, and sure will come later. :)
ReplyDeleteYes!
DeleteThey're always in our hearts, but there are times when we really just want them in our arms.
ReplyDeleteKim, you said it well my dear.
DeleteWonderful snow angel memories of your son.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWell and warmly written, the deepest thoughts of a Mom, on a traditionally important day, of JOY, but with a spot of darkness in her heart. We celebrate with all who are here, but miss MOST the one who is not!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that always the way, maybe even with God?
PEACE and LIGHT, Ayala
Wise words, Steve. Thank you. Peace and light to you my friend.
Deletetender and lovely :) ~jackie~
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jackie.
DeleteA wonderful tribute. I like the notion of you giving your angel 'wings to fly.' Very nice!
ReplyDeleteSteve K.
Thank you, Steve. :)
DeleteSo beautiful Ayala!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Laura. :)
DeleteYou have to let them fly eventually, but it's good when they find their way home again ... smiles
ReplyDeleteTrue :)
DeleteYou love and devotion to your son is so apparent--beautiful memories.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Victoria.
Deleteso much snow!
ReplyDeleteof all the touching lines, the one that resonated with me was your soul rested. it's funny because that sentiment has been kicking around in my mind lately, the idea of love leading to authentic rest. it worked so well to show his effect on your being. gorgeous stuff, so poignant.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ed. Love heals, doe it not ?
DeleteAwww - that is so very sweet. Sometimes it's difficult to recognize the golden moments while they're happening. I think writing can help us to be more thoughtful. I'm also glad of the explanation at the end, the imagery in the poem almost sounded as if your son died. I'm glad it was only absence at Christmas!
ReplyDeleteoh my...I'm glad I wrote the note. Thank you, Mary.
DeleteTime really goes fast--important to collect the images-- very sweet--you sound very close which is lovely! k.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Karin. Thankfully we are :)
Deleteto bad we have to go through so much in order to write beautiful words as you have done Ayala! you described your moment perfectly and i had no trouble being there with you. the pic. makes me wonder if you were up at our neck of the woods. :)
