I wrote a poem
and betrayed my soul
for today I feel dark and alone.
The news saturating our beings,
drowning us
with sorrow.
The ancient temple destroyed,
migrants fleeing to Hungary,
children hungry and lost.
Senseless killings,
manhunts and lives coming undone.
My heart aches,
I am ankle deep in the sewer of life.
Philosophy and love are not the answer,
heroin on the streets is not the answer,
frankly I don't know what is.
In the face of so much it is easy to feel helpless and to begin to question the point of it all. Love is a question we have to ask ourselves in every moment. Will I love. How can I love. What can I give. It does matter in the end
ReplyDeleteAs X said, the common denominator is Love; without it the darkness & chaos rule & win, dragging us into depressed doldrums. All we can truly be responsible for is ourselves, how we relate to the world & the people around us. I fight rage all the time. I like your line/ I am ankle deep in the sewer of life/. So make lemonade, make love, & wear hip boots.
ReplyDeleteThis is so intense & thought provoking!
ReplyDeleteYou express our human angst and predicament so poignantly...a desperate situation that we cannot solve ourselves, we need a savior who transforms us.
ReplyDeleteI think so many of us are feeling what you are writing about here. We do feel helpless and it seems like there is little we can do.
ReplyDeleteThe world is sometimes full of chaos and evil, we cannot change some things and it does make us feel helpless. It only we as humans would choose to love a little bit more.
ReplyDeleteWe will overcome after mourning!

There is so much sadness in today's world. I was heartbroken about the news of the temple being destroyed. And what in the world is the answer for all of those fleeing migrants! I empathize with your last line. I don't know what is the answer either.
ReplyDeletei think often the little things that we can do for those around us can be an answer. my daughter teaches german in one of the refugee camps close to where we live. it's a small thing but makes a big difference for the girls that have a chance to learn the language
ReplyDeleteIf you get 2 comments from me, panic not, it's blogspot playing up with Wordpress again.
ReplyDeleteI was saying that I know that feeling of overwhelm and helplessness in the face of suffering and destruction all too well, but I don't think poetic effort is ever wasted. Those two opening lines really made me stop in my tracks though!
Yes, I feel this way so often, and then I hole up and bury my head in the sand for a while. But I can't live there, so eventually I must return to the news of the world. There doesn't really seem to be an answer, except that I think we can only do what we can do within our own lives. Make the world around us a better place as much as we can. xoxo
ReplyDeleteUgg, yeah there is so much crap out there it doesn't make you happy for life sometimes
ReplyDeleteSome days it's hard to see the light shining through the darkness, isn't it? I love this quote: "Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid.” ― Frederick Buechner
ReplyDeleteIt is confusion in a confused world and no one is listening

Let us hope love and grace will transcend the despair. xo
ReplyDeleteWe are the ones that have created the chaos and then we wonder what to do with it. I think the answers are simpler than we think, but it would take individual change on such a broad spectrum.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed both of your poems.
When I read the news, I get very depressed too ~ No, drugs is not answer but love is and kindness ~
ReplyDeleteHope you are well Ayala ~

I love the first two lines.
ReplyDeleteThese are dark days indeed. I don't know the answer either.
ReplyDeleteI think not many of us do!
ReplyDeleteNice to see your poem again today, Ayala!
ReplyDeleteEverytime I come to your blog and see your sweet smiling dog, I know there is hope in the world, still. I don't have any answers either but I have to believe that love will win out and all will have a home. Spencer is kanzensakura
ReplyDeleteAnkle deep in the sewer of life...well said.. we're all there no doubt.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling that only by finding the sun in our heart we can make change., but these stabs at humanity leaves us with scars,
ReplyDeleteheavy with sadness this world is weighted down, prayer lightens our burdens

much love...
I don't think any of us does (know the answer, I mean), certainly not the Governments of Europe in their ivory castles.
ReplyDeleteit's cliche, isn't it, but as I get older, the more I come to believe that Love is the only answer. ~

You have expressed so well how discouraged we can become when we see so much wrong. Fortunately, also there is much right that is happening - on the human level, person to person, helping hands extended. I really relate to your poem, and you wrote it so well.
ReplyDeleteIt gets to feeling like a big old hole doesn't it? I think real love is the answer.
ReplyDeleteThird time I am seeing this poem...and again there is news of another temple destroyed today. Will it never end?
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the answer is either, but I applaud your honesty--there is much sadness in the world right now
ReplyDeleteThere are many of us that share your sad mood, Ayala, over the atrocities going on worldwide. Like Sherry said, there is much good going on too but our media moguls don't like to share that with us. So we have to find it ourselves and lift ourselves up.
ReplyDeleteThe world is in a messy place right now...
