Refuge

I bow to the trees,
the birds are my choir.
I find refuge in silent fields,
immunity unspoken,
wounds barely healed,
redemption afforded.
I have forgiven you,
but not myself.
"Not possible" you exclaim,
the ache is throbbing,
the mind is searching,
answers are far and few.
Don't ask me if I want to live,
ask me if I choose to die.

So excited that http://dversepoets.com/ is featuring http://dannygregorysblog.com/. The photo above is his illustration. I recently found him through my friend and talented poet and artist Claudia at https://jaywalkingthemoon.wordpress.com/ . I love his work !

  2. Thanks for taking part, Ayala! Sometime forgiving oneself is the hardest. Your poem made me wonder about the background of this poem.

  3. Wasn't Gabriella's prompt over at dVerse today wonderful? The interview she did of Danny Gregory is definitely a keeper. The last two lines of your poem make me wonder as well....I wonder who in your poem has the choice of 'to live or to die.' I think there is a backstory to this poem.

  6. There is a lot of substance in this, Ayala...and underlying tone of sadness, but also of beauty. I'm really enjoying the poems written to Danny's work.

  7. I LOVE this poem, especially "I bow to the trees. The birds are my choir." Mine, too. The last two lines are concerning. It reminds me of a time when I was struggling, and a dear friend said he knew it was harder for me to live, easier to die.......I am glad I chose life, because wonders awaited that I could never have dreamed.

  8. It's always good to find refuge in nature. But some wounds do take so long to heal, they feel like death.
    Good writing Ayala. Enjoyed.

  9. What a poignant poem, Ayala. There is significance and substance in all of your lines. I especially loved the line "I find refuge in silent fields, immunity unspoken"

  10. It can be incredibly hard to forgive yourself... others, too; but you have to live with yourself and that makes the wounds heal much slower in a lot of cases.

  11. The opening line really drew me in as it is very symbolic to bow to the trees for there is a sense of freedom in the movement.

  12. i think the hardest person to forgive is ourselves - it's so vital though for being able to move on and love again...

  13. I chose poetry, which precludes that I choose life, & stiff-arm death; as for forgiveness, I've found it healthy to be quick to forgive myself, & sort of drag my feet in the forgiveness of others; something I am working on. Nice take on Danny's image.

  14. Love that 'the birds are my choir.' ~ Feels good the willingness to forgive...takes time though and efforts...starts from loving yourself and others as yourself....
